Chemical Engineering: Integration of Applied Sciences with Process Engineering

One of the prominent requirements of the current scientific world is to establish a perfect balance between fundamental and applied knowledge. Chemical Engineering, as a technical domain, plays a key role in providing that desired balance. The biggest misconception about this field is with respect to its application. Chemical Engineering is more into process design and development. This branch of engineering connects applied sciences with technology and finds application in most of the industrial sectors. Few common examples are FMCG, Pharmaceutical, and Petrochemical Industries across the world.

Chemical Engineering deals with the basics of heat, mass, and momentum transfer operations. The branch utilizes energy and material balance concepts with unit operations for process scale-up studies. Modeling and simulation with optimization and engineering economics knowledge assist the chemical engineers in designing efficient process plants. In addition, chemical engineers with their background of process safety and environmental systems build safer and cleaner industries as per the government standards. 

Our societies have entered the digital age and would like to solve most of the technical problems using computational techniques. Chemical Engineering, given its seamless blend with applied mathematics and computer sciences, has been able to provide the necessary platform to our technical community for resolving operational issues and enhancing the productivity of our industrial plants. Advanced technologies need the intervention of data analytics with high-end computing for ensuring economically sustainable and highly effective management of process units. This domain provides the interface of applied sciences with process engineering to develop integrated solutions for chemical and other process-intensive industries.
