PROGRAM DETAILS - BA (Hons./Hons. With Research) Journalism and Mass Communication 

OVERVIEW

BA (Hons./Hons. With Research) Journalism and Mass Communication is a 4-year Undergraduate program designed as per the guidelines of National Education Policy-2020. The program is customized keeping in view the changing trends and media landscape of the world. The curriculum is of the global standard to meet the expectations of the aspiring new age media and communication professionals. This program will enable the students to compete with their contemporaries as it provides a wide range of optional courses. The techno-creative program aims to meet the skill requirements of media studies students. It is a 3+1-year program where a student can exit after 3 years with a simple BA Journalism and Mass Communication Degree. In the 4th year students can opt for the Honours or Honours with Research degree by choosing the relevant courses from the curriculum basket

BENEFIT OF THE PROGRAM

  • After completion of the 4 years BA (Hons./Hons. With Research) program a student can opt for a one-year master’s in journalism and mass communication (MAJMC).
  • The 4 years degree helps the students in going for the post-graduate program in any global/ foreign university.
  • Students can opt for any of the Minor Specialization in the last year of the program.
  • The program offers two specializations e.g.
  1. Advertising and Public Relations
  2. Digital Media
  • The program focuses on the all-round development of the students.
  • The program provides Major Core courses, Minor Electives, Minor  specialization, Ability Enhancement Courses, Skill Enhancement Courses, Open Electives, Multidisciplinary Courses and Value-Added Courses.
  • Internships and Projects are integral part of the program.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Sky is the limit for the graduates of Journalism and Mass Communication. There is no such field where the communicators are not required. So, in all fields a Journalism and Mass Communication graduate can choose to work. But yes, after completion of the UG program in Journalism and Mass Communication a student can opt any of the following fields of media to work.

 

Television: Copy Editor, Voice Over Artist, Panel Producer, Bulletin Producer, Production Executive, Program Producer, Program Director, Reporter, Run Down Producer, Video Journalist, Video Editor etc.

Radio: Radio Jockey, Copy Writer, Program Producer, Promo Producer, Programing Head, Transmission Executive, Voice Over Artist, Transmission Head etc.

Newspaper/Magazines: Sub-Editor, Layout Design Artist, Photojournalist, Reporter, Special Correspondent, Principal Correspondent, Edition in Charge, Editor etc.  

Digital Media: Social Media Manager, Digital Media Content Creator, Reporter, Digital Marketing Manager, Digital Marketing Executive, Online Reputation Manager, Digital Photographer, Photojournalist, Content Writer, Transmedia Storyteller etc.

Advertising & Public Relations: Advertising Copy Writer, Advertising Designer, Ad Agency Manager, Corporate Communicator, Public Relations Officer, Crisis Manager, Strategic Communicator, Publicity Manager etc.

Event Management: Event Manager, Liaison Officer, Event Planner, Media Manager, Production Organizer, Fashion Photographer, Production Manager etc.

LAB FACILITIES


The School of Media and Communication has state of the art lab facilities for its different programs.

 

  • Television Program Production Studio:  Equipped with modern production equipment, camera, microphone, audio console, vision mixer and lighting facilities. Interviews, Talk shows, Panel discussions and other fictional and non-fictional content can be produced in the studio. It is attached with a Production Contral Room (PCR).
  • Television News Production Studio: The studio is completely acoustic with a chroma set up and real set. The studio is dedicatedly designed for news and bulletin production. It has a teleprompter, camera, and lighting facility.
  • Video Editing Lab: The video editing lab is equipped with Apple iMac’s video editing software Final Cut Pro (FCP) for complex and high-end editing projects.
  • Audio Production Lab: The audio production lab is equipped with the latest microphones, audio console, speakers, monitors, audio editing and production software to enable recording, editing, and mixing of the audio content.
  • Radio Manipal 90.8 FM: The School of Media and Communication has a dedicated community radio station which is operational and broadcasts programs regularly. The students of Journalism and Mass Communication are engaged in design, creation, production, and transmission of the content on radio.
  • Print & New Media Lab (Designing & Graphics): The lab provides the opportunity to the learners to create digital content, design the content for digital platforms, make layout and design of newspapers and magazines and go for graphic designing for print and digital media. It has licensed software for design needs.
