Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Manipal University Jaipur organized an online webinar on the 100th birthday of renowned Indian film director Satyajit Ray. Former Dean of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune Professor Amit Tyagi was graced the session as the guest speaker and shared interesting observations about the director.
The webinar took place on 2nd May on MS Teams. Many people joined in and put their questions.
Prof. Tyagi showed a short film by Ray called ‘TWO’ (1964). Upon watching the film, many of them spoke about their observations and tried to draw inferences from the film. People observed symbolism in a few shots. Prof. Tyagi stated how the physical forms of the two boys in that short film indicate their backgrounds.
Prof. Tyagi believes that Ray was a genius, and his work was extraordinary. However, he thinks that his films were better when the background score was given by professional music composers rather than Ray himself. Ray has maintained that the best technique of filmmaking was the one that was not noticeable. He disliked the idea of a film that drew attention to its style and technical aspect rather than its content. Prof. Tyagi agrees with this ideology. He thinks that the best films are those that make you forget about any technical aspects and force you to focus on the story.
To sum up everything, Ray focused on making ‘real’ films rather than mass entertainment films. Ray was not only the finest director of India, but also one of the mightiest writers of Bengal and India. His works has always been and will always continue to remain prominent in World cinema.
